My Beef with Bing

So here’s my beef with the Bing logo. When it got unveiled, almost two years ago now, about the whole design community was up in arms about the design of the logo. It was odd looking, it already looked outdated, and again Microsoft failed to design (or commission, which is the case this time around) something visually appealing. Do I disagree with these statements? Very much so. My biggest concern however is that the design displays an alarming lack of understanding of type design. Leave it to me to give Microsoft a better alternative, and point out to Razorfish (Microsoft’s in-house graphic design firm) what it is they missed. Read more…
Primer on Subway Map Design: Redesigning Prague’s Subway Map

For as long as I can remember I have had a fascination with maps. Especially the way subway maps are designed. I really enjoy how they are so different from natural terrain, because in every aspect they are manmade. The way that the make their way underneath buildings and streets is simply fascinating. The challenge with subway maps is also due to this fact. Because you are moving under ground, you have no point of reference, to where you are in relation to the surface. Finding a balance between easy to read (very rigid, systematically) and easy to connect with the natural surroundings (organic, reflecting the actual path of each subway tunnel) is the key challenge.
